** NEW ** - OSER Group wins 3-year NSF ITEST Grant to conduct research on 21st Century Science skills related to Ocean Sciences! Welcome to the Ocean Sciences Education Research web site, a research project at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. This project is focused on the teaching and learning of ocean science concepts using wired and mobile Internet devices within and across classroom and informal (aquarium, museums, outside) learning contexts.  We seek to improve our understanding of student learning of ocean and environmental science concepts, broadly speaking, as a means for improving science education and scientific literacy. In particular, this research group focuses on the design and use of Internet technologies (real-time data, GIS, wiki’s, social-networking, Internet media, etc.), both on traditional computers and on mobile computing devices, in classrooms and on field trips. These tools are then used to research:  2) the connections between science learning and environmental decision-making, 3) the learning and teaching of ocean science as a progression of conceptual understanding, and 4) the design and use of eLearning technologies (WISE; mobile data collection; ENCORE Wiki for researchers) for teaching science concepts both inside and outside the classroom. |
